School Social Workers

Our Purpose

Who are school social workers?

We are trained mental health professionals with a master’s degree in social work who provide services related to a person’s social, emotional, and life adjustment to school and/or society.  We are the link between the home, school, and community in providing both direct and indirect services to students, families, and school personnel to promote and support students’ academic and social success.

Purpose of School Social Workers:

Students have various biological, psychological, and/or social factors that can disrupt their ability to learn in an academic setting.  Whether these students are in the general education population or receiving special education services, school social workers help to mitigate the barriers that exist to their education.

Services School Social Workers Provide:

School social workers may work with students who show signs of social, emotional, physical, or environmental difficulties that interfere with their school adjustment and achievement.  This may be done individually, in small groups, and/or in the classroom.  School social workers do not work with students who have community and/or home problems that are not manifested at school, provide long-term psychotherapy for students, or provide family therapy. Working with the social workers is not intended to replace any outside counseling or therapy that your child receives.

Contact Information for Campus Social Workers:

If you have any concerns related to your child and would like to request social work services, please contact your campus social worker.

RISD Care Closet

What is the Care Closet?

Our school district’s Care Closet provides essential items—such as clothing, hygiene products, school supplies, and shoes—to students who may need extra support. The goal is to remove barriers so all students can feel comfortable, confident, and ready to learn.

How does it work?

Students can access the Care Closet discreetly through the school social worker. Families may also reach out directly if support is needed. There is no cost, and student privacy is always respected.

How can you help?

You can support the Care Closet by making financial contributions or participating in donation drives throughout the year. If you would like to donate to the Care Closet please contact one of the district social workers. Together, we can ensure every student has what they need to succeed.
