Coronation

The History of Coronation in Robinson ISD

Coronation is an annual Robinson tradition, which has been celebrated in this community for many years.  It is a pageant-type event in which representatives from each grade level are selected and ends in the crowning of the Coronation Queen and King.  When this event first began 60+ years ago, the queen was elected by popular votes after a carnival.  Then several years later, the high school students competed for the crown by hosting a food drive.  Over the years, this event became the catalyst for fundraising efforts for various Robinson High School programs and projects.  Specifically, students of each high school class worked diligently holding many fundraising events such as selling t-shirts, tailgates before football, Halloween carnivals and much more to raise money for RHS scholarships through the RHS PTSA and for a chance to be crowned the King/Queen. In 2019, Coronation was completely passed on to the Robinson Education Foundation and became a District-wide fundraiser involving all of the Coronation participants, their families, teachers, and classmates.  During the last few years, the fundraising efforts have been adjusted based on feedback from the community and parents. REF first held a reverse raffle and each parent and student provided a basket for the silent auction, sold tickets to the event, and garnered sponsorships to compete for the crown.  The Coronation event lasted several hours and the cafetorium was at maximum capacity. After feedback, the fundraising moved to strictly raffle ticket sales with each participant required to sell a certain amount of raffle tickets to participate.  After more feedback, not all students wanted to walk on the stage and during COVID, REF was only able to host the event by limiting the number that walked the stage and were present the day of the event. Because of this feedback, the event and fundraising shifted again to allow students to participate as the class representative only or sell raffle tickets to raise money for teacher grants and compete for the crown. The event became a more formal pageant-like setting with round tables and families sitting together. Since the adjustment, this event raises the most money for REF teacher grants than any other event hosted by REF.

The Elections

Coronation elections take place in the fall each year and each of the classes at the Primary, Elementary, and Intermediate campuses (ECSE through 6th Grade) will elect a class representative.  The ballots for Junior High and High School (7th-12th Grade) will list all students (boys and girls) by House. Whichever student receives the most votes for his or her House will be the Duke or Duchess, respectively for that House.  Every student in the District who is eligible to participate in extracurricular activities is eligible to be elected.

The Fundraising Responsibilities

Students are asked to sell raffle tickets only.  This is the only fundraising requirement. Students that sell at least $500 worth of raffle tickets will participate in the coronation day event. Those who sell raffle tickets but do not reach the $500 amount will not participate in the coronation day event but all funds will still help contribute towards teacher grants and programs at Robinson ISD. All students that are representatives still have pictures taken, are advertised as class representatives and have lunch with the principal.  It is an honor to be chosen by classmates to represent the classroom and/or grade level.

The Crowning

On Coronation day, the class representatives who sold over $500 in raffle ticket sells will participate and walk on stage to represent their class. Students at the Junior High and High School level will represent their House. The students who sell the most raffle tickets at each campus will be crowned the Prince/Princess of their campus.  Then the Prince and Princess who sold the most raffle tickets out of ALL five campuses will be crowned Coronation King and Queen.
